I always use professional translation software, and currently have Trados Studio 2015 and 2017 and memoQ 2015. These tools are used to create a what is known as a translation memory containing the original and translated texts. If the same or nearly the same sentence is repeated, the software automatically uses the existing translation. This can help make the translation process more efficient. Where several translations done for the same client, the tools can also help to ensure that the terms used are consistent throughout.
When a new translation assignment comes in, my first step is always to assess whether the subject matter falls within my speciality areas, as well as the required time for the translation. Together, these aspects determine the cost of the translation.
I never accept an assignment if I will not be able to guarantee the quality of my work. During my career, I have translated texts for various specialised business domains. For Russian, these include forestry, the timber industry, fur farming and legal agreements. For German, my specialist domains include electrical engineering and machinery.
All my translations are proofread and checked by a second language professional. This colleague checks the spelling, style and often also the factual accuracy of the translations. All this is included in the price of the translation.
I apply the Finnish Association of Translators and Interpreters’ General Terms and Conditions for Translation to all translation assignments. Link: here
